Alta M. Schmidt, age 85, of Hanover, Illinois, died Friday, June 4, 2010, at the Galena Stauss Nursing Home, Galena, Illinois. A funeral mass will be held at 10 :30 a.m. on Monday, June 7, 2010, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hanover. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Visitation will be held from 4 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 6, at the Law – Jones Funeral Home in Hanover, with a Rosary Service held at 6:30 p.m. A memorial has been established in Alta’s name. Alta was born May 25, 1925, in Abilene, Kansas, the daughter of Allen and Alta Mae (Morris) France. She married Anton “Tony” Schmidt on January 10, 1948, in Abilene. Tony preceded her in death on February 7, 1992.
Alta was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hanover. Alta was a babysitter for many children in Hanover, she always babysat for anyone who needed her help. Alta enjoyed bingo and jigsaw puzzles, and walked ten miles a day. She loved to pick at the guitar and sing “You Are My Sunshine.” Alta’s family would like to thank the staff at Galena Stauss Nursing Home for their kindness and caring during her time there.
Alta is survived and lovingly remembered by one daughter, Maggie (David) Richmond of Hanover, Illinois; one son, Hank (Sue) Schmidt of Pulaski, Tennessee; one daughter – in – law, Deborah Schmidt of Loveland, Colorado; five grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and one sister, Betty LaClaire of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Alta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Tony; and her siblings, Bonnie Gilbert, Margaret Abel, Clarence France, Ernest France, Bob France and Lloyd France.
