Allen Ross Miller, age 77, of Savanna, passed into heaven Monday, September 8, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, Iowa. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, Savanna. Burial will be in the Savanna Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna.
Allen was born November 17, 1936 in Savanna, Illinois, the son of Glenn and Fern (Ross) Miller. He is a Savanna High School graduate with the Class of 1954. As a young man back in 1957, Allen was known for having "the fastest car in town." He enjoyed hunting and farming in the Carroll Heights area and worked at the local sawmill, and later worked for Tautz Excavating. Allen married Shirley Hicks in 1958. They had three children, Connie, Ron and Jay. Allen later married Maxine Gartman in 1970 and with this marriage he invited two children, Tom and Tam, and he and Maxine also had a son, Craig. Allen moved to Arkansas where he operated the Razorback Truck Stop for several years. Maxine passed away in 1993. Allen later married Betty Hartman in Savanna in 1994. Betty passed away in 2005.
Allen worked for his son, Ron, at Miller Excavating for many years. He loved operating heavy equipment, welding, working on diesel engines, and liked figuring things out. In his younger years, he enjoyed dancing and bowling. He loved being around family and his grandchildren were special to him.
Allen is survived by six children, Connie (Jim) Hull of Darlington, Wisconsin, Ron (Lori) Miller of Savanna, Jay (Annette) Miller of Savanna, Craig (Kisheen) Miller of Bentonville, Arkansas, Tom (Lynee) Miller of Lebanon, Missouri and Tammy Fisher of Lebanon, Missouri; eighteen grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Allen is preceded in death by two wives, Maxine and Betty; two brothers, Wilbur and Paul; and both parents.
