Alice M. Hockman, age 91, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois passed away Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt.Carroll with Reverend Mark Harkness of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 26 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Alice’s honor.
Alice was born May 25, 1918 near Argo Fay, Illinois, the daughter of Max and Anna (Nipe) Fulton. She is a graduate of the Mt. Carroll High School and Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, with a teaching degree. On May 18, 1941, Alice married Robert Hockman in the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church. He passed away November 2, 1997.
Alice taught country school for a few years and then worked as a cook for the Mt. Carroll Schools for 15 years. She was a member of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church and a fifty-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and past Matron. Alice enjoyed traveling with her husband to see covered bridges and visiting the majority of state capitols in the U.S. She also liked reading, crossword puzzles and gardening.
Alice is survived by two sons, Gerald “Jerry” Hockman of Clinton, Iowa and Delbert (Janet) Hockman of Mt. Carroll; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a sister, Thelma Smith of Morrison, Illinois. Alice is preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Joyce Nelson.
