Alfred F. Kummer, age 79, of Apple River, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at his home. A funeral mass will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 12, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Elizabeth. Cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral mass. A private family burial will take place in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Elizabeth at a later date. Memorials may be given to F.H.N. Hospice in Alfred’s memory.
Alfred was born February 11, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John and Otilia (Batke) Kummer. He attended Crane Tech High School Chicago, Illinois and studied music at the Chicago School of Music. Al enlisted in the United States Navy serving during the Korean War. Alfred married Christel Roderfeld on April 21, 1956 at St. Matthews Church in Chicago. He worked as a machinist at the Chicago Sun Times for twenty-five years retiring in 1995.
Al was a member of the Wooddale VFW Post 2149. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, boating, movies, all kinds of music, and playing the accordion for family and friends. Most of all Al loved spending time with his family.
Alfred will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Christel; two sons, Craig (Lori) Kummer of Vernon Hills, Illinois, Jeff (Karen) Kummer of Roselle, Illinois; a daughter, Julie (Stephen) Caspar of West Des Moines, Iowa; four granddaughters, Christl, Jamie, Candice, Liz; sister, Ella Kummer of WoodDale, Illinois.
Alfred is preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
