Alfonso Cantu

August 1, 1939 — November 30, 2013

Alfonso “Al” Antonio Cantu, Jr., age 74 of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Illinois.
Al was born on August 1, 1939, the son of Alfonso and Elenor (Saenz) Cantu in McAllen, Texas. He attended McAllen High School before enlisting in the United States Navy. Al honorably served his country in the United States Navy for four years aboard the USS Toledo. After he was honorably discharged, Al moved to Hanover, Illinois to be with his mother. He met his future wife, Bonita “Bonnie” Wills, alongside the road between Hanover and Savanna, Illinois when Bonnie and her friends were stranded with a flat tire and Al stopped to help. Al and Bonnie were married in 1961 in Elizabeth, Illinois. Bonnie died on December 21, 2005 at her home.
Al worked at Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling, Illinois for over thirty years before retiring in 1995. After retiring, Al and Bonnie travelled across the country. They enjoyed travelling to wherever their children and grandchildren lived, never missing an event, such as birthdays and Christmas, with family. Al enjoyed drawing, watching old movies, and playing cards, especially Canasta. Most of all, Al treasured spending time with his family and his loyal Shih Tzu, Oliver.
Al will be dearly missed by his three sons, Dean (Sandy) Cantu of Elmwood, Illinois, Dion (Leanne) Cantu of St. Louis, Missouri and Dana (Violet) Cantu of Texas; eight grandchildren; Derek, Shannan, Dylan, Drake, Deanna, Dalton, Martha Juliana, and Isabella; and one half-sister, Nora (David) McMillan of San Antonio, Texas. Al was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bonita “Bonnie” Cantu, and one infant daughter, Dru Alexis Cantu.
Cremation Rites will be accorded. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, 107 N. Main Street, Elizabeth, Illinois.
