Alan Brunner, who possessed strength, independence, and kindness, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2024 at Pinecrest Nursing Center in Mt. Morris, Illinois. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience and compassion. Throughout his life, Alan faced the challenges of disability with unwavering determination, never succumbing to adversity but instead embracing each day with a spirit that was at times ornery and stubborn, and always rooted in a good heart.
Born November 23, 1965 in Savanna, the son of Harlan and Donetta (Burkholder) Brunner. Alan navigated his journey and often inspired those around him. He is a 1984 graduate of the Mt. Carroll High School where he was a member of FFA and 4-H Club. Alan helped on the family farm, then later worked at Rolling Hills Progress Center in Lanark, starting in 1990. His years at Rolling Hills were not just about work; they were a testament to his pride in his contributions and the relationships he forged. Alan's dedication was matched by his thoughtfulness, always taking the time to inquire about others' well-being, especially during their moments of illness or hardship.
Family held a special place in Alan's heart, and he found joy in spending time with loved ones and attending church. He cherished memories of his youth on the farm, working alongside his dad, caring for livestock. He always remembered his dog named Sandy. He cherished holidays when everyone was together.
Alan's circle of friends was a cherished part of his life, as he found delight in watching Eastland and West Carroll sports and being an active member of his community. His involvement in the Lanark Lions Club and the Mt. Carroll Church of God reflected his commitment to service and fellowship. He was up for adventure whenever someone asked him to go along to watch a game, a concert, or just drive through the countryside. If he wasn’t at the game, he was probably listening on the radio.
Life tested Alan in ways that many may never understand, yet he faced each trial with a spirit that refused to be broken. His journey was a testament to perseverance, doing his best, and crossing the finish line with dignity and resilience.
He will be dearly missed by his mother, Donetta Brunner of rural Savanna; a sister, Janell (Dan) Hartman of Mt. Carroll; a brother, Kerwin (Angela) Brunner currently of Wausau, WI; two nieces, Celia Hartman and Lydia Brunner; and nephew Daniel Hartman. He is preceded in death by his dad Harlan in 2020.
As we bid farewell to Alan Brunner, we are grateful for the lessons his life imparted. His legacy of strength, kindness, and determination will continue to inspire us all. May we remember him with fondness and gratitude, thanking God for the privilege of having known and learned from Alan.
Alan’s family is thankful for the care he received from Lutheran Social Services, who helped Alan live independently. A Celebration of Life service will be held 2pm Sunday, May 5, 2024 at the Mt. Carroll Church of God followed by a luncheon. Visitation will be 12:30 – 2pm, prior to the service at the Church.
