Agnes Anna McCarthy, age 96, of Preston, Iowa, died Monday, August 26, 2013 at Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 29, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston, with Father Don Hertges as Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with a Rosary Service held at 3:30 p.m., and also one hour prior to the Mass on Thursday. Memorials may be given in Agnes’ memory as a scholarship, or to the Jackson County Hospice.
Agnes was born September 20, 1916, in Spragueville, Iowa the daughter of Peter and Rose (Michel) Kilburg. She attended Spragueville and Springbrook country Schools and later received her GED in 1971. Agnes married John McCarthy on September 19, 1940, in Preston. John died December 14, 1970. Agnes and John farmed for thirty-one years in Spragueville.
Agnes was a member of the Preston Legion Auxiliary, past member Economic Growth and Development Committee in Preston, Rosary Society, Farm Bureau, Preston Garden Club. She enjoyed gardening, canning, flowers, traveling the United States, playing cards, quilting, baking, reading and praying the Rosary.
Agnes is survived by two daughters, Jeanette (Leland) Lane of Preston, Betty (Michael) Hogan of Waverly, Iowa; a son, William (Marian Timmerman) McCarthy of Cambridge, Wisconsin; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; daughter in-law, Anita McCarthy of Hanalei, Hawaii; two brothers, Robert (Carol) Kilburg of Preston, Arnold (Joanne) Kilburg of Des Moines, Iowa and a sister, Mildred Driscoll of Preston.
Agnes is preceded in death by one daughter, Sally Ann (John) Ringen; a son, Bernard McCarthy; grandson, David Ringen; three sisters, Kathryn Bormann, Marie Schmidt and Rosemary Till; two brothers, Raymond and Herbert Kilburg.
