Visetta Anna Leonard

January 26, 1923 - May 27, 2022

Visetta Anna Leonard stayed young-at-heart helping to raise her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, known to everyone as “Grandma Vi.” At the age of 99, Visetta passed away Friday, May 27, 2022 at MercyOne Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa. Visetta was born at home January 26, 1923 in Teeds Grove, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Ida (Huebner) Greve. She attended the Common Country School. On August 8, 1942, Visetta married Russell Leonard. They raised two daughters, Beverly and Judy, and celebrated 21 years of marriage before Russell’s passing in 1966. Visetta helped Russell on the farm and he referred to her as the “best hired-hand” possible. Visetta enjoyed spending time with other seniors playing Euchre and 500. She also made a weekly trip to Miles to play cards with her siblings. She was skilled at baking and canning, and looked for reasons to share with others. When grandkid’s friends visited they counted on getting a freshly-baked chocolate chip cookie. Visetta was amazed at how the world changed over her lifetime, and glad to be part of it. She held the recognition as Sabula’s oldest living resident and was recognized as the Parade Marshall for Sabula Days. She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church and the Senior Club in Sabula. Visetta worked for Dairy Pack in Clinton for 13 years and the Savanna Army Depot. She believed in participating in her community and caring for others when needed. She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Judy (David) Rittmer of Sabula; a son-in-law, Ronald Giddings, Sr. also of Sabula; 6 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Lester (Shirley) Greve of Sabula and Willis (Gloria Ann) Greve of Bryant; three sisters, Jeanette Gruhn of Camanche, Yvonne Meier of Preston, and Donna Galusha of Miles, Iowa. Visetta is preceded in death by her husband, Russell; her daughter, Beverly; 2 grandsons, Randy Giddings and Duane Rittmer; 3 brothers, Gary, Lee and Ben Greve; a sister, Alice Kroeger; and a brother in-infancy, Richard. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula with a visitation one hour prior from 10 – 11 am. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula. A luncheon will follow at the Church.
