Raymond Holland

Raymond H. “Doc” Holland, age 83, of Elizabeth, Illinois, died Friday, September 7, 2007, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Elizabeth with Father Jim Canova as Celebrant. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Elizabeth. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 10, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth Memorials may be given to the River Ridge School District Library in Doc’s memory.Doc was born October 28, 1923, the son of Wesley F. and Marie (Handt) Holland in Woodbine, Illinois. He attended several Country Schools near Elizabeth. On August 4, 1951, Doc married Marilyn A. Martin in Elizabeth.Doc farmed thirteen years near Elizabeth. He worked as an Insurance Agent for Country Companies for thirty years, retiring in 1986. He then worked eight years at the A.S.C.S Office, Elizabeth. Doc was a lifetime member and usher at St. Mary Catholic Church, Elizabeth, and the Knights of Columbus. He served as a Volunteer Fireman for the City of Elizabeth for fifteen years and a Cub Scout Master for ten years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and playing cards. Doc loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a man who was always willing to lend a helping hand.He will be dearly missed by his wife, Marilyn of Elizabeth; three sons, Gary (Kathy) Holland of Libertyville, Illinois, Kevin (Carole) Holland of Billings, Montana, and Roger (Mary) Holland of Apple Valley, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Scott (Kristie), Matt, Kim, Laura and Eric Holland; one great-grandson, Jack; a brother, Lawrence Holland of Galena, Illinois; two sisters, Bertha (Harold) Herrmann of Rock City, Illinois and Ruth Marks of Apple River, Illinois; two sisters-in-law Shirley and Mary Holland of Elizabeth; and many nieces and nephews. Raymond is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Albert and David; and two sisters, Freda Lisk and Lucille Peska.
