Lucille S. Thompson of Savanna, passed away Monday, October 19, 2020, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna. A private family visitation and funeral service will be held with burial to follow in Savanna Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Relay For Life Cancer Fund, c/o Randy Johnston, 18 Adams Street, Savanna, IL 61074. Lucille was born in Mount Carroll, Illinois, the daughter of Clarence L. and Alvena K. (Strauch) Switzer. She graduated from Mount Carroll High School, Class of 1939. She graduated from Shimer College in 1941, where she earned her Teachers Certificate. On January 1, 1942, Lucille wed the love of her life, Donald E. Thompson at the Community Church in Savanna. Lucille taught school for one year, and then accepted a position at the Savanna Ordinance Depot in the Administration Department. She worked there until March 31, 1944. In August 1948, she went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the Carroll County ASCS Office in Mount Carroll, Illinois where she was chief clerk and assistant office manager. After 41 years, she retired on December 31, 1989. She enjoyed her work and meeting the people. Lucille was a compassionate woman who loved taking care of her family and helping others. Lucille and her husband enjoyed traveling. Each fall they travelled either to Florida, where they enjoyed the beaches, or to California to visit with friends. The couple enjoyed visiting many Landmarks throughout their travels. Lucille and Donald were avid Chicago Cub Fans. After her retirement and since Donald had retired in 1981, they spent the winter months in Mesa, Arizona where they enjoyed the warm weather and the Cubs spring training, never missing a preseason game. Lucille was a member of the Community United Church of Christ and served on the Board of Stewards. She was also affiliated with the Board of Missions and the Board of Christian Education. She served in the Christian Education Department for over 30 years as church school superintendent, teacher, and secretary-treasurer. She also served on many church committees. She was also affiliated with NARFE, NARVE, the National Association of Active, and Retired Federal Employees, the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, Incorporation. Her family was especially dear to her. She loved cooking for them and taking them to special restaurants. Lucille will be dearly missed by her two grandsons, Rick (Janice) Johnston and Randy (Charlotte) Johnston; great-grandson David (Alli) Johnston; great-granddaughter Jennifer Johnston; great-grandson and great-granddaughter Matthew Johnston and Corey Johnston; son-in-law, Ronald (Susan) Johnston; sister-in-law, Jeanne (Frederick) Bess; nieces Janet Rattray, Elaine (McKenzie) Davis; nephews, Robert (Anita) Grimm, Ronald, and Gary Switzer; Barbara (Dennis) McFadden; Janice (Mark) Schoening; John (Deborah) Piper; Ronald (Maria) Thulion. She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Alvena, husband Donald, daughter Cheryl Ann Johnston, sisters, Mildred Miller and Veneta Piper, and brother Clarence Switzer.
