John C. Potter

John Carl Potter, age 68, of Savanna, IL, passed away February 1, 2022 at MercyOne Hospital, in Clinton, IA. Family and friends are invited to share in his life at lawjonesfuneralhome.com. John was born August 4, 1953, in Savanna, IL, the son of John and Ida (Iverson) Potter. He graduated from Hanover High School. In 1986 he married Mary Weaver; they went on to raise two daughters. Mary’s career with the federal government meant they lived in many places throughout the world including Germany, Korea, and Hawaii. In each place, John would find new mini-careers. The jobs ranged from construction, to bus driver, to animal crematory operation. Their many travels, instilled in John and Mary an appreciation of other cultures and customs, and in John’s case, a fondness for foreign cuisine. He loved trying local foods; the more unique, the better. German food was probably his favorite. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, and was friendly to all. He treated everyone he met with a high level of respect and kindness. At home, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. John will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary; daughters, Tanya (Shawn) Diep and Tina Leavens; four grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; a brother, Nick (Nellie) Bainbridge; a sister, Mary Jo (Dave) Slocum; nephews, Walter Slocum and Kenneth Slocum. John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Ida.
