Glen Luverne Sherf, age 93, of Platteville, Wisconsin, formerly of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, passed away Friday, August 26, 2016 at Manor Care in Platteville, WI. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. A memorial service and burial at Pine Hill Cemetery will take place at a later date in Williams, Minnesota. A memorial fund has been established in Glen’s memory.
Glen was born August 20, 1923, in Hastings, Minnesota, the son of Fred and Alice (Stubbs) Sherf. He graduated from Patrick Henry High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota and then enlisted in the United States Navy. Glen honorably served his country as baker first class in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. Following the war, he pursued a degree in Institutional Management at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Glen married Bette Richardson on June 27, 1948 in Long Beach, California. In 1956, they moved back east to Minneapolis to be near family. During his life, Glen worked at restaurants and grocery stores until 1967 he and Bette when moved their family from Minneapolis to Mount Carroll, Illinois where they owned the Coast to Coast Store until 1984.
Glen and Bette loved to travel throughout the United States, including Hawaii, Alaska and Canada. Glen was a member of the Mt. Carroll Lions Club. Glen is a member of the Mount Carroll United Methodist Church. He helped with the church's turkey dinners, delivered Meals on Wheels, helped with the community food pantry in Savanna, served as the Usher Chairman for five years and helped on the recent Kitchen Design committee. Glen had a personal greeting card ministry. He sent cards to family and friends for special occasions. Glen enjoyed being a general handyman, painting houses, fishing, wood working, gardening, reading and baking. Glen always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends especially at his cabin at Birch Beach on Lake of the Woods near Williams, Minnesota. For the last five years, his residence has been at Park Place in Platteville, Wisconsin where he was known for baking and sharing special treats or turning lights on in the morning and off at night. When in Platteville, he attended the Evangelical Free Church. On his 92nd birthday August 20, 2015 he and son Doug embarked on a three day Veteran’s Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Roberta (James) Delp of Darlington, Wisconsin; three sons: Randall (Naomi) Sherf of Amherst, Wisconsin; Gregory (Julie) Sherf of Sonora, California; and Douglas (Lorri Mostad) Sherf of Mt. Carroll; grandchildren: Roberta and Jim’s children: Michael Delp and Elizabeth (Joshua) Graham; Randy and Naomi’s children: Corey (Jamie), Jeremy (Nicole), Jaime and Cody Sherf; Greg and Julie’s children: Josef, Joshua, Jacob, Jaxon, Jillena, and Jenee Sherf; Doug’s children: Ashley, Andrew, and Aryn Sherf; Lorri’s children: Stacy Krueth and Hugh Mostad-Holter; and great-grandchildren; Corey and Jamie’s children: Lauren and Hailey Sherf; Jeremy and Nicole’s children: Aliyah and Natalie Sherf; and Elizabeth and Josh’s children: Lily, Gabriel and baby Graham due in December, 2016; sister-in-law Jean Sherf and many friends in Mount Carroll, Platteville and Minnesota. Glen was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bette on November 17, 2002 and a brother Arden of Ithaca, New York.
