Gladys Kempter, age 96, of Sabula, Iowa died Thursday, July 7, 2011 at the Alverno Nursing Facility, Clinton, Iowa. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2011 at the Sabula United Methodist Church with Pastor Dennis Glew officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula. Visitation will be held 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2011 prior to the service at the Church. Memorials may be given in her memory for the Sabula Public Library, Arthritis Association, or the Diabetes Association.
Gladys was born March 17, 1915 in Gardner, Illinois, the daughter of Elmer and Elizabeth (Diffenbach) Schrotberger. She is a graduate of the Dwight High School, Dwight, Illinois. She then received Registered Nursing training at the University of Iowa graduating in 1937. On November 14, 1942, Gladys married Jack B. Kempter in Kokamo, Missouri. He passed away on March 28, 1966 in Clinton, Iowa.
Gladys worked as a Registered Nurse for the Iowa City Hospital and the Savanna City Hospital. She also worked at the Sabula Elementary School. Gladys was a member of the Sabula United Methodist Church; a past member of the Rebeccas; and she worked with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Clinton. Gladys enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, crafts, and was a great Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Gladys will be dearly missed by two sons, Jack (Sandra) Kempter of Sabula and James Kempter of Clinton; three daughters, Judy (Terry) Cravatta of Clinton, Jo (Dennis) Sanborn of Olwein, Iowa and Janet (Steven) Townsend of Riverdale, Iowa; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a brother in-law, Charles Mickelson of Mt. Prospect, Illinois. Gladys is preceded in death by her husband; both parents; and two sisters, Alice Mickelson and Mildred Schrotberger.
