Gary H. Schap, age 70 of Elizabeth, Illinois died on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at home. A celebration of life service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth. Burial of cremated remains will take place in Zion Presbyterian Cemetery, Schapville, Illinois. Military rites will be accorded by the Hanover V.F.W. Post #5300. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2013 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Elizabeth. Memorials may be given to FHN Hospice in Gary’s memory.
Gary was born on June 27, 1942, the son of Haldor Schap and Phyllis (Turner) Schiable at home in Hanover, Illinois. He attended Elizabeth High School and graduated with the Class of 1960. He served his country in the United States Army as a morse code intercept operator under the Army Security Agency from 1960-1963. Gary worked for the Illinois State Police for over thirty-six years making him the longest serving Illinois State Trooper. He retired as a Senior Master Trooper. After retiring he went to work for the Elizabeth Police Department for several years.
Gary was a member of the Hanover V.F.W. Post #5300 and was the Commander for over twenty years. He enjoyed reading newspapers and magazines. Most of all he loved the time spent with his girl friend Mary and his dogs.
Gary will be dearly missed by his two daughters, Lisa (Justin) Walters of Elizabeth, Kelly (Edwin) Rivera of Fort Carson, Colorado; two sons, Richard Schap of Sycamore, Illinois, Andrew Schap of Sycamore; eight grandchildren, Michael Bennett, Corey Twombly, Bret Twombly, Emma Walters, Ethan Walters, Madison Schap, Kendall Schap, Chad Schap; two great grand children, Logan Bennett, Brennan Twombly and his girl friend Mary Kistler of Hanover.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents.
