Elizabeth M. Gerlach Bondy, age 91, of Savanna, Illinois, formerly of Preston, Iowa, died October 1, 2010, at her residence in Savanna. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at the Miller - Law - Jones Funeral Home in Preston. A private family interment will take place at the All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, Illinois, on Wednesday, October 6. Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of Jackson County in Elizabeth's memory.
Elizabeth was born January 6, 1919, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Wagner) Gerlach in Charlotte, Iowa.
She served as a Lieutenant in the Army Corp of Nurses during World War II. After an honorable discharge from the Army, she went back to school to earn her degree in nursing and worked as a private duty nurse. She later worked for the Chicago Board of Education implementing school nurses into area schools. Her duties involved making sure children received basic health and dental care and their shots were up to date. During this time she married Carroll Bondy of Chicago, Illinois.
Elizabeth is survived by 11 neices and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Bondy; two sisters, Helen Gerlach and Margaret Black, three brothers, Wilfred Gerlach, Joseph Gerlach Jr., and Eugene Gerlach; one niece, Diane Gerlach, and one nephew, David Gerlach.
