Ruth Jane Wiegert, age 92, of Savanna, Illinois passed away Monday, March 13, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa. A private family memorial service will be held. Ruth's family asks that you "pay it forward" by doing a good deed towards others in her memory.
Ruth was born December 6, 1924 in Chicago, the only child of Adolph and Charlotte (Wagner) Ross. She was a 1942 graduate of Amundsen High School, Chicago. Ruth met the love of her life, Wayne Wiegert, after Wayne returned in 1947 from serving in the US Navy. On July 31, 1948, Ruth married Wayne Wiegert in Chicago. They have celebrated sixty-eight years of marriage and raised four children, Ross, Grant, Cathy and Carol.
Soon after their first child, Ross, was born, Ruth and Wayne decided to move out of Chicago to a smaller community, and found Savanna. Ruth and Wayne raised their four children on Park Street in Savanna, always remembering fondly those special years when the children were young. Park Street was a world within itself, holding parades in the summer, and bringing together life-long friends. She was a fabulous homemaker, always taking care of her “number-one” husband, Wayne.
Her children and grandchildren treasure the memories of her ability to play cards, playing board games while adding her own twist, making delicious homemade donuts, Sweet Petals coffee cake, and "homemade" lasagna for Amanda, and the numerous ways that she would thoughtfully show her love for them. She was especially talented at keeping Wayne “in-line.” Ruth was an avid reader and served on the Savanna Public Library Board. She attended the First Presbyterian Church in Savanna, and she and Wayne were recipients of the Community Builders Award from the Savanna Masonic Lodge.
Ruth will be dearly missed by her husband, Wayne of Savanna; four children, Ross (Claudia) Wiegert of Elgin, Illinois, Cathy (Larry) Wolfe of Trenton, Illinois, Grant Wiegert of Luray, Virginia, and Carol (Rob) Canier of Savanna; seven grandchildren, Bryan (Emily) Wiegert, Andrea (Andy) Ferrante, Jason (Julie) Wolfe, Jill (Steve) High, Nate (Jenny) Canier, Natalie (Chris) Roy and Amanda (Mike) Amico; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Ruth sent cards for all occasions. If you are reading this far, you probably received one. In that same spirit, Ruth's family gives a big thank you to all the staff at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, especially the PCU Floor, for their loving care they gave to Ruth.
