Ronald Lee Wolber

Ronald Lee “Ron” Wolber, age 83, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois passed away peacefully Friday, August 31, 2018 at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday, September 7, 2018 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Brookville Cemetery. Ron was born February 27, 1935 in a farmhouse in Jordan Township, rural Sterling, Illinois. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and later graduated from Sterling High School with the Class of 1953. Ron attended the Morrison Institute of Technology in Mechanical Engineering. Ron then served in the US Air Force from 1959-1961. Ron later studied drafting at Highland College, Freeport. On June 14, 1959 in Polo, Ron married Helen Brooks, the love of his life. They had first met while skating at the White Pines Roller Palace, Polo. Ron and Helen celebrated 59 years of marriage.

Ron worked many years for Micro Switch in Freeport as a Drafting Engineer until his retirement. He had also previously worked for Quaker Oats, Oregon, Illinois, Jolly Green Giant, Lanark, and as a carpet installer when he was younger. He loved his work and later pursued a hobby as a videographer, capturing many family celebrations on video. He enjoyed golfing in the Micro Switch golf league, collecting miniature cars, turning old TVs into cabinets, and working with Tannery leather tooling. Ron was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, proud to see them win a World Series. His fondest pastime was spending time with family, especially working with Jody and his grandsons on Jody’s 1971 GTO. He was a member of the Lanark Church of the Brethren.

Ron will be deeply missed by his wife, Helen Wolber of Mt. Carroll; his son, Jody Wolber of Mt. Carroll; his grandson, Justin (Ashley) Wolber of Warren; and two great grandsons, Corbin and Brodey. Ron is preceded in death by a grandson, Dakota, May 11, 2018; three brothers, Wayne in infancy, Marvin, August 10, 2018 and Harold, January 31, 2014; and two sisters, Florence Dickinson, May 23, 2015 and Helen Friel, January 6, 2015.
