Leslie “Les” Junior Guilinger, age 89 of Savanna, Illinois, previously of Little York, Illinois, died Sunday, December 6, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa. Cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. A memorial visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place in Little York Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
Leslie was born on November 23, 1926, in Little York, Illinois, the son of Leslie and Mildred (Kniss) Guilinger. He graduated from Little York High School with the Class of 1944. Les proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He is a 1967 graduate of Western Illinois University. On December 17, 1952, he married Ruth Dye in Kirkwood, Illinois. They spent 63 years together.
Les was a Junior High Social Studies teacher and coached in Alexis, Illinois. He also spent 18 years as a Special Education teacher for the Knox-Warren Special Education District at the Central Junior High in Monmouth, Illinois. During his teaching career, he coached football, basketball, and track.
Most of all, Les loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking, sports, including softball and golf. He was a member of the Savanna VFW and Kirkwood Masonic Lodge.
Les will be dearly missed by his wife, Ruth, of Savanna; two children, Lea Ann (Tom) Michels of Savanna, and William (Julie) Guilinger of Chandler, Arizona; five grandchildren, Joe (Bituin) Michels, T.C. (Tara) Michels, Abigail (Shay) Bradbury, Michael Guilinger, and Matthew Guilinger; three step-grandchildren, Heather Allen, Casey Allen, and Tai Fairrington; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Pat Schwass of Monmouth, Illinois; and a brother, Ancil (Sharon) Guilinger of Savanna. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ellen Guilinger.
