John Haas, age 87, of Elizabeth, Illinois, died on Sunday, September 14, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 18, 2008 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Elizabeth. Reverend Harvey Nicholson will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodbine Cemetery, Woodbine, Illinios. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth. A memorial fund has been established in John's memory to St. Paul Lutheran Building Fund.
John was born October 12, 1920 on the family farm in Woodbine Township, the son of Jacob and Fredricka (Brudi) Haas. He attended Allen Country School and the Elizabeth High School. On February 8, 1948 John married Lorraine Ellen Townsend at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Elizabeth.
The most important thing to John in life was his family. He knew each one of his sons and daughters as pumpkin. John lived his life to its fullest. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball, and flying.
John was a life long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Elizabeth, where he was also a member of the Men's Club and Choir. John was proud to be a member of the Board of Directors at the Elizabeth Bank. He had also been an active member of the Jo Daviess County Beef Producers, Elizabeth Volunteer Fireman, the Elizabeth School Board, and the Lions Club.
John will be dearly missed by his wife, Lorraine of Elizabeth; two daughters, Nancy Haas (Dan Dyer) of Stockton, Illinois, Cindy (Gene) Eichmeier of Freeport, Illinois; three sons, Lloyd (Lisa) Haas of Elizabeth, Greg (Jeniele) Haas of Elizabeth and James (Ann) Haas of Byron, Illinois; fifteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; a brother, Fred Haas of Elizabeth; a sister, Marie Lieb of Elizabeth; and special friends, Ted and Velda Krohmer.
John was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Peter, Joseph, Erwin, Paul and Gus; and one infant sister Katherine.
