Gene Flack, age 85, of Savanna, died Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Community United Church of Christ, Savanna, in Gene’s honor.
Gene was born September 3, 1926 in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin, the son of Clifford and Sarah Katherine (Cox) Flack. He attended Sand Ridge Country School, Thomson, and graduated from York Community High School, Thomson. Gene served his country in the Army during World War II as a Radio Operator Paratrooper, and the Air Force during the Korean War. Gene married his wife, Donna Mickelson November 20, 1948.
Gene worked as a Carman for the Milwaukee Railroad for 30 years. He also worked as a representative for Local 1346 Labor Union in northwest Illinois. Gene served as the Mayor of the City of Savanna from 1968 to 1970 and again 1989 to 2005 and also previously served on the city council. He was a member of the Savanna Lions Club, Mississippi Masonic Lodge, Savanna VFW and American Legion, the Savanna Rotary, and the Jaycees. Gene was a member of the Community United Church of Christ, Savanna.
Gene enjoyed watching, listening to, and never gave up on the Chicago Cubs. He loved fishing, hunting, and vacationing in South Padre Island, Texas and Balsam Lake, Wisconsin.
Gene will be dearly missed by his wife, Donna of Savanna; a son, Todd (Roberta) Flack of Mt. Prospect, Illinois; a nephew/foster-son, Clarence (Carol) Flack of McAlester, Oklahoma; two granddaughters, Isabella, and Marisa; as well as three foster grandchildren, Sean, Heather, and Corie. Gene is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Forrest and Merrill; and two sisters at birth.
