Donald S. Wolfe, Jr., age 73, of Savanna, Illinois, died Sunday, July 18, 2010, at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Savanna Township Cemetery, Savanna. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Heartland Pet Welfare, Inc.
Donald was born February 7, 1937, the son of Dr. Donald S. and Harriet (Alee) Wolfe Sr. in Clinton, Iowa. Donald’s family is the only remaining family in Savanna that is a direct descendent of the original Savanna settlers. He graduated from Shattuck Military Prep School in Faribault, Minnesota, Class of 1957. Donald attended Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago, Illinois. Donald married Mary Winkler on February 20, 1965.
Donald was a Funeral Director with Hunter Funeral Home, Savanna. In 1973, Donald and Larry Bearsley started what is now known as the Savanna Ambulance Association. He also worked for the Railroad Express in Savanna, the Milwaukee Railroad and retired from the Carroll County Sheriffs Department. Donald loved animals and always looked after stray cats and dogs. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Most of all, Donald cherished spending time with his family and friends.
Donald will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary of Savanna; three sons, Jim (Joy) Wolfe of Rockford, Illinois, Scott (Lisa) Wolfe of Savanna, and Tim (Tracey) Wolfe of Chicago, Illinois; four grandchildren, Cooper, Joe, Nick and Eva. Donald was preceded in death by his parents.
