Charles Ray Meyer, age 85, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2017 at his sister’s home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Cremation Rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Savanna. Burial of his cremated remains will take place in the Savanna Township Cemetery, with Military Rites accorded by the Savanna V.F.W. Post #2223. A gathering will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
Charlie was born February 16, 1932, the son of Ray and Mildred (Paulson) Meyer in Newhall, Iowa. He attended Van Horne High School, graduating with the Class of 1951. Charlie proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1951-54. After he was honorably discharged, Charlie married Donna Schrader on March 16, 1957. They celebrated 53 years of marriage until Donna’s death in 2010.
Charlie worked in Communications for the Milwaukee Railroad in Savanna, retiring in 1995. In his younger years, Charlie volunteered as his son, Jamie’s baseball coach and Boy Scout pack leader. He was always supportive of his son, whether it was his musical pursuits or playing sports. After retirement, Charlie enjoyed tinkering in the garage and riding his Harley Davidson, with his wife, Donna.
Charles will be dearly missed by his son, Jamie, his wife Krys Meyer and two grandchildren; Galli and Abigail, all of Palm Harbor, Florida; and one sister, Ruth Hartwick of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is preceded in death by his wife, Donna, and one sister, Evelyn Shminky.
