Thomas R. “Tom” Ackerman, age 74, of Sabula, Iowa died Monday, September 25, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 29 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Sabula with Father Don Plamondon as Celebrant. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 28 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Sabula. A memorial fund has been established in Tom’s name. Tom was born February 4, 1932 in Savanna, Illinois, the son of Chester and Emalene (Bingaman) Ackerman. He is a graduate of the Sabula High School with the Class off 1950. He married Patricia Vicks January 26, 1952 in Sabula.Tom owned and operated Ackerman’s Grocery in Sabula for 19 years, retiring in 1994. He had also worked for George Vallet for many years of Vallet Poultry which originated in Sabula.Tom was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Sabula; a past member of the Sabula Volunteer Fire Department and Sabula City Council. He is also a past City Clerk and Scout Leader. Tom loved the time he had with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed his morning coffee group, gardening, hunting, fishing, woodworking, and the outdoors. Tom was generous and personable. He never met a stranger.Tom will be dearly missed by his wife, Patricia of Sabula; six children, Julie Swanson of Circleville, Ohio, Janet (Mike) Cotton of Sabula, Joy Ackerman of Sabula, Tim (Fran) Ackerman of San Diego, California, David Ackerman of Sabula and Jon Ackerman of Sabula; seven grandchildren, Bridget (Ryan) Kilburg, Doug (Rebecca) Sandholdt, Jennifer (Dannie) Stameski, Cari Swanson, Rachel Cotton, Steven Cotton and Mary Ackerman; four great grandchildren, Nathan Sandholdt, Camille and Lauren Kilburg, and Rosalynn Stameski; one brother, Robert (Nancy) Ackerman of Eldridge, Iowa; and one sister, Peg Huebner of Sabula. Tom is preceded in death by both parents; his brother, Don; brother in-law, Chuck Huebner; and granddaughter, Jill.
