Robert N. “Bob” Sievert, age 88, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Monday, January 4, 2010 at FHN Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2010 at SS. John & Catherine Catholic Church, Mt. Carroll with Father Dennis Atto as Celebrant. A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Bob was born May 21, 1921 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of William and Lena (Johns) Sievert. He attended Savanna Schools after moving to Savanna, Illinois when he was only five. After school, Bob went to work for the Civil Conservation Corps, working in Wisconsin and at the Savanna Army Depot. He then joined the U. S. Coast Guard and served on the Destroyer Escort, U.S.S. Chambers during WWII. As Chief Petty Officer, Bob ran the engine room of the Escort ship and became a great mechanic. On April 25, 1942, Bob married Carolyn Ann Ballas in Savanna, Illinois. She passed on January 10, 2009 in Mt. Carroll. After WWII, Bob ran a taxicab service in Savanna named Atomic Cab Co. until 1947, when he opened Sievert’s Tavern in Mt. Carroll. Sievert’s was located in the Weismiller building on Main St. until they moved to their current location on Market St. in Mt. Carroll. In 1955, Bob began making the original Sievert’s Pizza, which quickly became a hallmark item at the restaurant. He and Carolyn owned and operated the bar and restaurant until retirement in 1988.Bob enjoyed family time, snowmobiling in winter and outings on the Mississippi River each summer. He hand-built a wooden boat for the river, naming it “Lucia.” He also built his own pontoon boat. He was an avid football fan, cheering on the Packers and Notre Dame. Bob was a member of SS. John & Catherine Catholic Church in Mt. Carroll.Bob will be dearly missed by family, friends, and all who knew him. He leaves his two daughters, Lucia Sievert of Long Beach, California and Michelle Sievert of Appleton, Wisconsin; two sons, Robert "Bobby" Sievert of Mt. Carroll and Ronald "Ronnie" Sievert of Sedona, Arizona; five grandchildren, Katie (John) George of Salida, California, Kelly (Harold) Tanalepy of Sacramento, California, Larry (Christy) McNertney of Hughson, California, and Trevor and Matthew Pearce of Appleton, Wisconsin; and seven great grandchildren, Shannon, Briannah, Kellen, Shawn, MacKenzie, Riley and Eva. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Carolyn; his dear daughter, Joan; a brother, William; and both parents.
