Lyle Herman Cornilsen

Lyle Herman Cornilsen, 82, of Miles, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, IA. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Preston, IA at 1:00 pm. Burial will be in the Andover Cemetery, Andover, IA with full military rites accorded by the Miles American Legion Post #677. A luncheon will follow the burial at the Miles Legion. Visitation will be on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Preston from 10:00 am to 12:45 pm, prior to the service.
Lyle Herman Cornilsen was born on May 20, 1932, the son of Edward Henry and Romey Wilhelmena (Bratthauer) Cornilsen. He was a 1949 graduate of Goose Lake High School. On January 3, 1953, Lyle married Bernadine Eickert. He entered the military on January 9, 1953 in Des Moines and was discharged on December 24 of 1954 at Fort Carson, Colorado. He achieved the rank of Sargent. He received the Korean Service Medal, United Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the Miles Legion.
Lyle began working as a farm hand in Clinton County after his military service. He then worked for the Moorman’s Feed Company as a salesman for many years. After leaving Moormans he worked for Galesburg Order Buyers buying hogs at the Bryant, IA facility. He later retired from the Collis Company in Clinton. Lyle enjoyed camping, fishing, watching sporting events, spending time with family and friends and especially enjoyed watching his sons and grandchildren play sports.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 62 years Bernadine of Miles, two sons Gregg (Dee) Cornilsen of Clinton and Gordon (Kendra) Cornilsen of Miles. Six grandchildren, Joel of Chaska,MN, Claire of Dubuque, Kurtis of Preston, Jordan of Blue Grass, Mallory of Dubuque and Kaleb of Miles. Four sisters, Lucille Buell of Killean, Texas, Lois Swanson of Plainfield,IL, Dolores Diercks of Andover, and Selma Schilling of DeWitt, several sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws and many nieces, nephews and several cousins. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Howard and two sisters, Avalda Mallstrom and Marilyn Krutzfield and one granddaughter McKenzie.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers are Ron Younts, Jack Kempter, Kevin Kempter, Darwin Paddock, Dwaine Schroeder and Harlan Miller. Memorials can be made to the family.
