Leroy H. Johnson, age 84, of Maquoketa, Iowa passed away Friday, January 27, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 2, 2017 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Preston, Iowa with a visitation being held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will take place in Miles Cemetery, Miles, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Preston.
Leroy was born on December 21, 1932 in rural Sabula, Iowa, the son of William and Lillian (Henricksen) Johnson. He attended Glen School House in rural Sabula. On May 14, 1953, Leroy married the love of his life Charlene “Babe” Asmussen at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Preston. They celebrated 63 years together. Leroy honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Leroy was a lifelong farmer, he took pride in being a farmer and a good steward of the land.
Leroy was a member of the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Preston, he was also a member of the Codfish Hollow Saddle Club. He enjoyed playing cards of any kind, John Deere tractors, driving around the countryside admiring the crops. Most of all, Leroy treasured the time he spent with his family especially family get togethers.
Leroy will be dearly missed by his wife of 63 years, Charlene “Babe”; six children, Lee (Marlene) Johnson of Maquoketa, Larry (Mary Lou) Johnson of Maquoketa, Lester (Nancy) Johnson of Bellevue, Iowa, Linda (Lonnie) Waknitz of Clive, Iowa, Lola (Lonnie) Trenkamp of Preston, Iowa, Loren (Bonnie) Johnson of Preston, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and an aunt, Martha Schwartz of Sabula. Leroy is preceded in death by his parents.
