Kathryn Loomis Seitner

Kathryn Loomis Seitner, age 82, of Mt. Carroll, IL, died March 28, 2008, at Good Samaritan Center. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008, at the First Baptist Church, Mt. Carroll with Reverend Jim Green officiating.Kathryn was born in Cedar Rapids, IA, on June 5, 1925, the daughter of Charles E. and Hazel J. Loomis. She graduated from Franklin High School and Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA, where she majored in Sociology and Psychology and minored in German. At Coe she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority where she served as president, President of Associated Women Students, elected to the National Honors Society, and served as secretary on the Student Council. Following graduation from Coe she served as private secretary to the school’s Dean of Admissions. Kathryn married Reuben H. Seitner, Jr., on Jan. 31, 1947 in Cedar Rapids, IA.She came to Mt. Carroll with her family in 1949 and immediately became involved in community affairs.Kathryn was a member of AAUW, Bridge A Rama, the Mt. Carroll Community Club and the Ladies Investment Club. She was a 50-year member of Chapter GA of the PEO Sisterhood. Kathryn belonged to the First Baptist Church where she taught Bible School, joined ABW, sang in the choir and directed the children’s choir. Endowed with a beautiful contralto voice, she presented recitals at Shimer College and other communities in the area including Rockford. She played Mother Superior in the Sound of Music at Timber Lake Playhouse in Mt. Carroll as well as productions in Sterling IL and Clinton IA. She also sang the contralto solos in Handel’s Messiah in Mt. Carroll and surrounding communities.Kathyrn taught Remedial Reading at Mount Carroll school for many years and later served at as social worker for Lutheran Social Services and Department of Children and Family Services until retirement. Katie loved working in her flower garden and supporting her children and grandchildren in their activities. She had a great spirit.Kathryn will be dearly missed by her husband of 61 years R.H. (Bud) Seitner of Mt. Carroll; two daughters, Sarah (James) Wheeler, Susie (Davis) Ostrum; four grandchildren, Stephanie (Brian) Wurster, Mary Kathryn (Joe) Hansen, Clayton Ostrum, Colton Ostrum, and 2 great-grandchildren, Andy and Emily Wurster. Kathryn was preceded in death by both parents and her brother Charles Loomis.Memorials may be made in Kathryn's honor for FHN Hospice and First Baptist Church of Mt. Carroll.
