John V. Heckman, age 79 of Miles, Iowa, died on Monday, March 21, 2016 at his home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on April 2, 2016, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Jackson County in John’s memory.
John was born October 21, 1936, the son of Arbie and Inez (Steiert) Heckman in Postville, Iowa. He attended Postville Schools and graduated high school with the Class of 1955. After school, John enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served his country as a policeman from 1955-1959 during the early part of the Cold War. John married Donna Camp on November 25, 1961 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Preston.
In John’s early years he drove a butter truck in the Postville area, during the summer months he drove a cement truck. After moving to Jackson County to begin farming, he continued with his trucking experience later in his farming career by hauling cattle and grain to market. John was an Asgrow seed dealer, a past president of the Jackson County Extension Council, a member of the Farm Bureau, and a member of the Miles Telephone Board. John had a passion for farming, raising livestock, and operating machinery. The only activity he loved more was spending time with his family and traveling to see them.
John will be dearly missed by his wife, Donna, of Miles, Iowa; two sons, John Jr. (Lisa) Heckman of Sycamore, Illinois, and Daron J.W. (Dawn) Heckman of Maple Plain, Minnesota; three granddaughters, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Sydney; six siblings, Don (Jean) Heckman of Texas, Les (Sherril) Heckman of Arkansas, Anne Rose of Waterloo, Iowa, Twila (David) Haviland of Des Moines, Iowa, Vicky Nye of West Union, Iowa, and Stanley Heckman of Colorado and a sister in-law, Karen Heckman of Oewlwein, Iowa. John was preceded in death by his parents; Four brothers, Allan, Gary, and Robert, Neal; and two sisters, Zeta Heckman and Jean Schulz.
