John L. Armstrong, of Thomson, IL, formerly of Mt. Carroll, IL, passed away Tuesday, October 31, at The Citadel of Sterling. A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date.
John was born February 6, 1946, son of Walter and Minnie (Banion) Armstrong. He grew up on the family farm, the youngest of seven children. His childhood was filled with helping with chores on the farm. He attended Mt. Carroll High School, where he met the love of his life, Judith Lantz. John and Judith married on June 11, 1963. Together, they celebrated 58 years of marriage, and raised four children.
John served his country during the Vietnam War in the United States Army. After his service he and the family moved back to the family farm in Mt. Carroll. He was a lifelong farmer, both crops and livestock. He was a member of the Mt. Carroll American Legion. In his spare time John enjoyed hunting, fishing, and having a good time.
John will be dearly missed by his three sons, Mike (Peggy) Armstrong, of Mt. Carroll, Daniel Armstrong, of Clinton, IA, and Ken (Stephanie) Armstrong, of Milledgeville, IL; daughter, Deb Armstrong, of Mt. Carrolll; eleven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Deb Armstrong; and sister-in-law, Lucille Lantz, of Chadwick, IL. John is preceded in death by his wife, Judith; his parents, Walter and Minnie; five brothers, Ray, Harry, Pete, Kenny, and Frank; and his baby sister, Dorothy.
