Janet M. Spoerl

Janet Marie Spoerl, age 79, of Elizabeth, Illinois, passed away March 2, 2018, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna. A visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 16, 2018, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Elizabeth. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 17, 2018, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Elizabeth, with a second visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m., prior to the service. Burial will take place in Elizabeth Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Janet’s name to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Elizabeth.

Janet was born on December 1, 1938, the daughter of Luther and Deloras (Johnson) Leavens in Savanna, Illinois. She graduated from Savanna High School with the Class of 1956. Janet married Kenneth L. Weidman on November 26, 1977 in Savanna, Illinois. He passed away suddenly on July 1, 1978. She later married Harvey Spoerl on July 20, 1979 in Savanna.

For most of her career, Janet worked as an administrative assistant in the Continuous Flow Manufacturing Department for Woods Equipment Company in Oregon, Illinois, retiring in 2005. Janet was a devout Christian as a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Elizabeth, Illinois. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family.

Janet is survived by her husband, Harvey; two stepsons, Kenneth (Sherri) Spoerl of Elizabeth, and Tobias (Kirsten) Spoerl of Granton, Wisconsin; one stepdaughter, Rebecca (Gary Valentine) Turner, of Dubuque, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Guy (Emily) Ghan of Marquette, Iowa; five step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth; her parents; a brother, Dwight Leavens; three sisters, Edna Leavens, Joyce Ghan, and Betty Goss; one grandson, Cole Michael Spoerl; a step-daughter-in-law, Cheryl Lynn Spoerl; one brother-in-law Don Goss; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Leavens.
