Irma M. Chiaverina, age 90, of Elizabeth, Illinois died Sunday, March 25, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 30 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Pastor David Poust, of the Elizabeth United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Elizabeth Cemetery, Elizabeth. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 29 at the Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established in Irma’s name.
Irma was born July 21, 1916, the daughter of Daniel Theodore and Luone Audrey (Rothberg) Mauller, in Omaha, Nebraska. She married John B. Chiaverina on August 13, 1945 in the Chapel of the Holy Grail at the University of Chicago campus. She was a lifelong member of the University Christian Church, Des Moines, Iowa.
Irma was a graduate of Drake University, School of Journalism with the Class of 1939. She wrote “Through the Shops With Sue,” an advertising column, in the Des Moines Sunday Register; worked two years on the regional desk of the Rockford Morning Star, as assistant editor, then Editor; 30 years as Jo Daviess County correspondent for the Rockford Morning Star; served 10 years as editor of the Galena Gazette and was a columnist of the newspaper until her death.
Irma was a member of the Illinois Women’s Press Association; National Federation of Press Women; Women in Communications, Inc.; Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce past president; and Galena/Jo Daviess Historical Society.
Following the death of her husband in 1980, she took over as owner and operator of his store, the Elizabeth Pharmacy. She sold the store in 1994, and opened a photo and video center. Irma continued freelance writing throughout this period. She was a ceramics hobbyist for many years.
Irma will be dearly missed by two sons, Chris (Roberta) Chiaverina of Crystal Lake, Illinois and Mike (Ginny) Chiaverina of Mequon, Wisconsin; and one grandson, John Chiaverina of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her husband and both parents.
