George A. Stephens, age 79, of Lanark, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2017 near his home during a walk with his dog Roscoe. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery, Elgin, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m., Friday, October 20, 2017 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. A memorial fund has been established in George's memory.
George was born on January 4, 1938 in Elgin, the son of James and Anna (Jensen) Stephens. He attended Elgin High School, and graduated with the Class of 1956. He was a printer by trade and owned and operated Stephens Quality Printing in South Elgin, Illinois for many years. George married Mary in 1957 in Elgin, Illinois.
George was a very giving and considerate person who was always the first to help others. He loved passing on his knowledge and wisdom. He enjoyed roller skating, fishing, gardening, playing cards, puzzles, riding motorcycles, spending time with his family and spoiling his dogs.
George will be dearly missed by his son, Wayne Stephens; daughter, Emily (Jesse) Varsho of Elburn, Illinois; four granddaughters, Meggan Flores, Samantha Stephens, Mackenzie and Samantha Varsho; five great-granddaughters, Kayla Szewki-Flores, Sophia, Evalina and Olivia Stephens, and Sofie Flores; one sister, Caroline (Karl) Winther of Show Low, Arizona and his companion, Sherrie Zarndt of Lanark.
George is preceded in death by his wife, Mary; a daughter, Penny Szewki; two brothers, Russell and James; a sister Martha; and two special friends, JoAnne Martin and Carol Wood.
