Francis “Frank” McCann age 86, of Elizabeth, Illinois, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at the Church of St. Mary Catholic in Elizabeth. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Elizabeth. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. prior to the mass at the church.
Frank was born on April 8, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John Joseph and Janet (MacPherson) McCann. He attended St. Willibrord’s High School in Chicago. Frank received his Bachelor in English from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and later received his Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Frank taught many high school students over his career at River Ridge in Elizabeth, Chadwick High School, Chadwick, Illinois, Erie High School in Erie, Illinois and one year in the Chicago area. Frank honorably served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was proud to have traveled on the Honor Flight in 2013 from Dubuque and truly appreciated the welcoming home that was received.
Frank was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Elizabeth, Elizabeth Historical Society, Church of St. Mary’s. Frank also performed in many plays in Freeport, Illinois, Galena, Illinois, Dubuque, and Hanover, Illinois with the Back Street Players and served on the play board. Frank enjoyed performing in plays, visiting friends. He was a lifelong Chicago White Sox fan.
Frank is survived by his three nephews; six nieces; two sister’s in-laws, Lois McCann of Chicago Heights, Illinois, Elizabeth McCann of Beecher, Illinois and many friends and members of the community that he considered his family. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janet Griffith and two brothers George and John “Jack” McCann.
