David Richard Smith, age 71, of Sabula, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018, at the University of Iowa City Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 7, 2018 at the Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula. Burial of Ashes with full military rites will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula. A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 6, 2018 at the Church. Memorials may be given in David’s memory to the Sabula Fire and Ambulance, Sabula American Legion, and the Calvary Lutheran Church.
David was born February 15, 1947, in Savanna, Illinois, the son of Richard and Violet (Rogers) Smith. He attended Sabula High School and graduated with the Class of 1965. David married Ruth Bowling on July 22, 1967 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula. Together they raised four children and celebrated 49 years of marriage until Ruth’s death in 2016. David proudly served his country as a Combat Engineer in the United States Army and the Army Reserves.
David worked as a battery repairman for the Savanna Army Depot for many years until his retirement. He was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula American Legion, the Jackson County Forty and Eight, Jackson County 911 Committee, and Sabula Fire and Ambulance where he served as Fire Chief for a number of years. David loved spending time with his family— especially his “Saturdays with his girls”.
David will be dearly missed by four children, Charles (Sheila) Smith of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Kenneth (Rhonda Scobee) Smith of Savanna, Yvonne (Jeff) Weimerskirch of Spragueville, Iowa, and Tony (Ria) Smith of Richlands, North Carolina; four grandchildren; one step granddaughter; two brothers, Gary (Sue) Smith of Jacksonville, Florida, Brian (Nancy) Smith of Overland Park, Kansas; and three brothers-in-law, James (Judy) Bowling of Sabula, Ronald (Rodessa) Bowling of Madison Heights, Virginia, and Daniel Bowling of Monroe, Virginia.
David is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his parents, and a daughter-in-law, Stacie Smith.
