Annella Crandall, age 86 of Hanover, IL, died Friday, December 13, 2019 at Galena Strauss Nursing Home. A funeral service will be held at 5pm on Monday, December 16, 2019, at the Presbyterian Church in Hanover, with visitation taking place from 4pm to 5pm, before the service. Family and friends are invited to share in Annella’s life at lawjonesfuneralhome.com.
Annella was born September 18, 1933 in New Cambria, MO, the daughter of Prosser Ray and Sarah Pauline (Grimshaw) Jones. She attended New Cambria schools, graduating with the class of 1951. After high school, she attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College, and was teaching 3rd grade by the time she was still just 19 years old. On June 6, 1954, Annella married Paul Crandall. The two went on to have three children, Randy, Steven and Karla.
Annella taught 3rd grade, 1st grade, and junior high for a total of more than 20 years, in Volga City, Wadena, and Clermont, IA. In 1976, she and Paul moved to Hanover, IL when Paul secured the position of CEO of the Hanover State Bank. They purchased the Ben Franklin Variety Store, which Annella and Paul ran for a number of years. Annella led a service-centered life, and was happy to give of herself whenever an opportunity arose. She was especially active in the Hanover Presbyterian Church, serving on numerous committees and in various roles over the years, and served as President of the Hanover VFW Auxiliary for 14 years. Annella worked during her retirement years for the Hanover Township Public Library. She was a tireless caregiver of others, from those in need in the community to her family members as they battled illness or injury. She enjoyed music and played the piano and sang. She also enjoyed bowling in leagues and with friends, playing cards, gardening and canning, but one of her greatest joys in life was spending time with and watching her grandchildren grow.
Annella will be dearly missed by her son, Steve Crandall, of Hanover, IL; daughter Karla (Steve) Waltner, of Chesapeake, VA; six grandchildren, Jonathan, Courtney, and Chelsea, of Hanover, and Kadance, Gage, and Jacelyn, of Chesapeake; three great-grandchildren, Kali, Brantley, and Paisley, of Hanover; as well as numerous other extended family members, and friends.
Annella is preceded in death by her parents Prosser and Sarah Pauline; husband, Paul; brothers, Jerry Jones and Bud Jones; sister, Shirley Bohling; and son, Randy Crandall.
